Frequently Asked Questions

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and has a great variety of cosmetic applications. For hair removal, Laser and IPL use energy in the form of light to destroy the hair follicle. The energy directed from the handpiece is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, momentarily heating it and killing the follicle, thus preventing further hair growth. For Photofacials, a different handpiece directs the energy deep into the skin, damaging the unwanted conditions such as excess pigment. The light energy also stimulates new, healthy collagen to be produced, stimulating a quicker cellular turnover, resulting in skin that looks and acts like younger skin.

What is the difference between Laser Hair Removal and IPL Hair Removal?

There are two big differences between Laser and Intense Pulsed Light systems. One is in the area that can be treated at one time and the treatment speed. Generally IPL treatment heads are up to 8 times larger than the small spot produced by lasers and therefore treatments are much quicker.

The other difference is the wavelength of light produced. Lasers produce light with one specific wavelength while IPL uses an entire waveband. Different wavelengths penetrate the skin to different depths so using IPL is like using a group of lasers in a single treatment.

What does IPL hair removal feel like?

Some people describe the sensation similar to a rubber band snapping on your skin. We use state of the art cooling devices to minimize discomfort and make it almost pain free.

How Should I Prepare For IPL Laser Hair Removal?

You cannot undergo IPL laser hair removal if you have a tan from sun exposure or sunless tanning products; you must wait until the tan completely fades. Make sure you let the technician know if you've recently tanned. A tan increases the risk of blistering and discoloration after treatment. To be on the safe side, you should avoid sun exposure four to six weeks before treatment.

Two to three days before having laser hair removal, you should shave the area to be treated and allow stubble to grow back. Don't wax or pluck the hair, or undergo electrolysis three weeks before treatment.

What can I expect during and after hair removal treatments?

During laser hair removal, you'll wear goggles so your eyes won't be exposed to light from the laser. The skin is treated with a cooling device so you may not feel anything, depending on your skin sensitivity. The treatment involves a series of impulses that may cause prickling and a slight stinging sensation, but most people can easily tolerate the procedure. Some people have likened the feeling to that of a rubber band snapping against your skin.

The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the work you are having done. The smaller the area, the less time is involved, whereas a larger area, such as the back, may require an hour or more.

After laser hair removal, you may experience brief swelling and redness, similar to a mild sunburn. Typically, most people don't experience redness or swelling for more than a day or do, if at all. It may take several weeks after treatment for the hair to fall out.

For the most part, you can return to your normal routine immediately, though you should avoid direct sun exposure. Be sure to use sunscreen with an SPF over 30. Some doctors also advise that you avoid exercise and strenuous activity for the first 24 hours so as not to perspire and cause increased irritation.

You should continue to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning booths for several weeks after treatment. Be careful when touching the treated areas: don't wax or pluck hairs, pick at the skin, or rub or scrub it. A gentle washing with soap and water is perfectly fine.

On average, people need between five and seven sessions to see results of about 85% to 95% of hair reduction in the area treated.

What can I expect to see after an IPL Photofacial?

Immediately following a Photofacial, your skin may appear flushed, with some redness subsiding within a few hours or days. Some people may experience slight swelling and irritation for a day or two. Brown spots can become darker before they diminish.

Am I a good candidate for IPL?

IPL works best on facial conditions such as sun-damage, red or flushed faces, age spots and freckles, enlarged pores or general uneven tone and clarity. For permanent hair removal or reduction, IPL works best on darker hair and fair skin.

How many treatments will I need?

For the Rejuvenation Treatments (chemical peels and/or microdermabrasion), best results are achieved with a series of 4-6 treatments, scheduled 2-4 weeks apart.

For Photofacials, a series of 3-5 treatments is recommended to see best results; but you will see an improvement after your first photofacial. You will receive a complimentary microdermabrasion 10 days after each Photofacial to facilitate exfoliation and polish your new skin.

For Hair Removal, a series of 5-7 treatments is usually needed to remove most or all unwanted hair for someone who is a "good candidate". If your skin is darker, or your hair is light or fine, you are not a good candidate for hair removal and more treatments may be required. In some cases, very light or grey hair cannot be effectively treated with any laser or IPL hair removal system. Laser and IPL have been used to remove unwanted hair for many years with a high degree of success; however, to be accurate we must call it "Permanent Hair Reduction." Although most hair will be removed over a course of treatment, some hair will remain and some may re-grow, usually much lighter and finer, therefore, occasional touch-up treatments may be needed.

How often should I schedule Hair Removal?

Hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth including age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism along with your hair's location, thickness and resilience. Only hair that is in the growing cycle will be destroyed at each treatment session. The number of hairs growing at any one time and the length of time between treatments varies, but generally we recommend scheduling every 4 to 8 weeks.

What is a "Cosmeceutical"?

"Cosmeceutical" is a combination of the words "cosmetic" and "pharmaceutical". The relatively new term is popping up all over and Cosmeceuticals are the new wave in anti-aging skin care. They are topical cosmetic-pharmaceutical hybrids intended to enhance the health and beauty of the skin. Skin is the largest organ in the body, both by weight and surface area. In adults, the weight of your skin accounts for about 16% of your total body weight. The skin separates the internal environment from the external. It is essential to protect and preserve the skin for your own personal health and self esteem.

Cosmetic skin care products only serve to cleanse and beautify. As opposed to cosmetics, cosmeceuticals will alter the structure and function of the skin.
